The rich history of Fifa World Cup trophy

The biggest prize in football went through an incredible journey that included war, thefts, and a heroic dog.

The Fifa World Cup has a rich history that is as riveting as the many contests it has witnessed. Amid all the bravery, heartbreak, and jubilation, the World Cup trophy itself has a fascinating story to tell.

The most iconic trophy in all sports that is instantly recognized all across the globe has lived a tumultuous existence. In fact, the trophy itself is not even 50 years old, even though the World Cup was first played in 1930.

To know more about the trophy, we need to go all the back to the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay.

Jules Rimet Trophy (1930-1970)

The first football World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930 and was made possible due to the efforts of Jules Rimet.

Rimet was the third president of Fifa and was instrumental in making the dream of a World Cup a reality. The trophy was created by French sculptor Abel Lafleur, 35cm in height and weighing 3.8kg. It was constructed with gold-plated sterling silver.

The trophy design featured a gold statuette of Nike - the Greek goddess of victory. Originally, the trophy was simply called 'Victory', and more popularly as the World Cup or Coupe du Monde.

In 1946, it was renamed the Jules Rimet Trophy in honor of the president. That the trophy survived was a miracle in itself. During World War II, the trophy was held by 1938 champions Italy. Italian vice-president of Fifa, Ottorino Barassi, took it upon himself to ensure the safety of the trophy, secretly removing it from the vault of a bank in Rome and hiding it in a shoebox under his bed during the entirety of the war.

Trophy stolen

Just four months before the 1966 World Cup in England, the trophy was stolen while on exhibition at the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster. Law enforcement agencies, including Scotland Yard, tried their best to recover the item but to no avail. One week after the theft, the trophy was randomly found wrapped in the newspaper lying next to a parked car by a dog named Pickles who was out on a walk with his owner.

Pickles became a national hero and received a medal and reward for the discovery. Thanks to the heroic canine, England captain Bobby Moore got to lift the original Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley Stadium after defeating West Germany in the final.

Trophy stolen again

Brazil won the World Cup for the third time in 1970 and was awarded the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently, as was the rule at the time. However, the original trophy was stolen for a second time in 1983 from the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro and was never recovered.

Fifa World Cup Trophy (1974 - present)

After Brazil won the trophy permanently, a replacement was commissioned for the 1974 World Cup. Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga's submission was accepted. The trophy design sees human figures spiral up toward a golden replica of the world. The trophy is hollow on the inside.

Following the debacle involving the Jules Rimet Trophy, it was decided that the original Fifa World Cup trophy can't be won outright anymore.

It remains in Fifa's possession at its Zurich headquarters and is taken out only for trophy tours, World Cup main draws, and the final presentation. Winners of each World Cup are handed a gold-plated bronze replica, known as the World Cup Winners’ Trophy. They get to keep the replica.

How much does the World Cup trophy weigh?

The Fifa World Cup trophy is 6.175kg of 18-carat gold. It stands 36.5cm tall and has a circular base that is 13cm in diameter.

How much is it worth?

The value of the gold in the World Cup trophy itself is worth $250,000, according to current gold rates. Four years back, the original Fifa World Cup trophy was said to be worth $20 million according to some estimates, making it easily the most valuable trophy in sport.

Given the exponential growth in the sports memorabilia market after the pandemic, that value would have easily gone up by many multiples. The famous jersey worn by Argentine Diego Maradona when he scored the 'Hand of God' goal against England at the 1986 World Cup was sold for $7.1 million in an auction earlier this year.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ official soundtrack - Hayya Hayya

Hayya Hayya is the official soundtrack of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

Lyrics:

Hayya, hayya, hayya (yeah)

Hayya, hayya, ha (you know what it is)

Hayya, hayya, hayya

Hayya, hayya, ha (red one)

Hayya, hayya, hayya (Aisha)

Hayya, hayya, ha (Davido)

Hayya, hayya, hayya (Trinidad)

Hayya, hayya, ha

I wanna walk the walk on every street

I wanna ball out with the world at my feet

Hit every discotheque and not skip a beat, yeah-yeah

I wanna party, party eight days a week

I promise, I promise, I promise you now

Everything, everything gonna work out

Every tomorrow, no matter what goes down

I promise, I promise, I promise you now

Gonna be, gonna be sticking around

Every tomorrow, no matter what goes down

you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) don't wanna wait forever

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) the time is now or never

you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) don't wanna wait forever

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) the time is now or never

Hayya, hayya, hayya

Hayya, hayya, ha

Life can be up and down, but what can you do? Eh

We navigate through all the rough and the smooth, yeah

We got that rock and roll, that rhythm and blues, yeah-yeah

I'm never blue if I am rockin' with you, oh-oh

I promise, I promise, I promise you now

Everything, everything gonna work out

Every tomorrow, no matter what goes down

I promise, I promise, I promise you now

Gonna be, gonna be sticking around

Every tomorrow, no matter what goes down

you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) don't wanna wait forever

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) the time is now or never

you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) don't wanna wait forever

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) the time is now or never

Yeah, you can hop on your own wave

Yeah, you can ride it for life

But every journey is better

When you got love on your side

you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) don't wanna wait forever

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) the time is now or never

you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) don't wanna wait forever

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) you know we're better together

(Oh-yo-yo-yo, oh) the time is now or never

Hayya, hayya, hayya

Hayya, hayya, ha

Hayya, hayya, hayya

How tiny Qatar plans to house a million fans during the World Cup

Qatar is expected to welcome a sizable contingent of guests this winter when it becomes the smallest nation ever to host one of the biggest sporting events in the world -- the FIFA World Cup.

The Gulf nation predicts that over one million fans will travel to Doha over the duration of the World Cup; that's around 37% of its population of 2.7 million. The country is only around 4,400 square miles in size or roughly the size of Jamaica.

Previous tournament hosts have faced several logistical issues in dealing with a large number of traveling fans -- ranging from transport to accommodation. The country's small size may have some advantages, but the challenges are plenty too.

An aerial view of Ahmad Bin Ali stadium at sunset in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

Already, there are reports of rising costs and a lack of suitable accommodation. For example, there are 21 properties available on online travel agency Booking.com for the first three nights of the tournament, with prices starting at $1,000 per night and rising to a whopping $51,000.

This isn't uncommon though. Reports from 2006 claim hotel prices spiked in Berlin and Frankfurt when Germany hosted the tournament. Prior to organizing the 2010 edition, South Africa was plagued by reports of unfinished training camps, while hotels were accused of hiking prices during the World Cup period.

"Our objective has always been providing fair and reasonable pricing for visiting fans," a spokesperson for Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SCDL) told CNN. "We work closely with key stakeholders to ensure affordable pricing across all types of accommodation."

Host nations have often found innovative ways to house fans, and Qatar is no different.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, residents living in the iconic favela slums opened their doors to tourists, renting beds, rooms, and even entire houses. Some travelers got creative and opted to stay in sex motels usually reserved for Brazilians looking to hook up after a night on the town.

Here's what Qatar has thought of to house the potentially million-strong football fans:

If you can't build them, sail them -- luxury cruise ships

Two luxury cruise ships will be moored at Doha's port for the entirety of the World Cup. Between them, they have nine pools, 3,898 cabins, 45 bars, and 10 fine dining options. Other facilities include a spa, tennis courts, and the world's largest dry slide at sea.

Worried you'll need to look your best for a group stage fixture between Japan and Costa Rica? Fear not, you'll have access to a barber shop and beauty salon.

The ships are a 10-minute shuttle ride to the center of Doha but staying in one of the spacious cabins will not be cheap. They should range from $605 to $2,779 per night -- though that's a snip compared to some of the other options available to ticketholders, considering it includes a buffet breakfast.

A home away from home -- apartments and villas

Qatar Accommodation Agency, the official supplier of lodging for the event, aims to make 100,000-130,000 rooms available on any given night of the 28-day tournament.

There are already listings for ticketholders for one to six-bedroom apartments and villas, with prices for ticketholders ranging from $84 to $875 per night. Most are easily accessible by public transport and the villas are fully equipped with kitchens, washing machines, pools, and gyms.

This accommodation, like others provided by the Accommodation Agency, will be rented out on a first-serve basis, via a staggered release in line with FIFA's ticketing phases or in packages provided by Qatar Airways.

On top of official accommodation, it will provide a booking platform similar to Airbnb for residents to rent out their homes to traveling fans. By applying for a license from Qatar Tourism, residents or owners of buildings can also list their apartments on other portals, such as Airbnb.

The festival experience -- fan villages

Ticketholders can purchase accommodation at so-called fan villages; described as "casual camping and cabin-style accommodations." At a cost of $207 a night, the small, basic converted portacabins are pricey, and only offer a kettle, fridge, and two bottles of water per day. They are dotted on the outskirts of Doha, the furthest being 25 miles from the airport. There will be a number of food and entertainment options available on site, but details about those have not been made available yet.

Desert camping, the Arabian way -- Bedouin-style tents

The camping option is not yet available on the official accommodation website, but the head of accommodation at the SC, Omar Al-Jaber, has said he plans to pitch 1,000 "Bedouin style" tents in the desert during the tournament.

Around 200 of those will be classified as "luxury" and cost an "expensive" fee, providing an "authentic" experience for fans, Al-Jaber told Reuters. They will have air conditioning to protect fans from the cold desert nights and sweltering morning heat.

If all else fails, sleep in a different country

Accommodation in Qatar is expected to be so limited that the country has opted to house ticketholders in neighboring nations and fly them in and out on short flights every day.

Qatar Airways announced in May that it had partnered with regional carriers to launch 160 extra daily return flights at "competitive prices" that will shuttle fans from Dubai, Jeddah, Kuwait, Muscat, and Riyadh. There will be no baggage check-in facilities to speed up the transfers and dedicated transportation services will be made available to get fans from the airport to stadiums.

It will also be possible to drive from cities like Riyadh, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, all of which are under seven hours away.

The singers behind the Arabic World Cup song ‘Arhbo’

The FIFA 2022 album will include up to six songs, including the latest release “Arhbo.”

Qatar has released its Arabic song ‘Arhbo’ for the first ever FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022—which is now on the tongue of almost every Arab thanks to its catchy rhythm.

The song gained massive traction immediately after it was released and quickly surpassed 5 million views on all of Ooredoo’s social media channels.

The music video for the song, titled Arhbo, was made by Qatari director Mohamed Al Ibrahim and was produced by Katara Studios in Doha.

The track, which features well-known singers, was released to the public at the Lusail Super Cup game between Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal and Egypt’s Al Zamalek, which also marked the opening of the last and biggest World Cup stadium.

The uniqueness of the song is rooted in the selection of artists featured within it. The producers of the song were conscious not to choose cliched famous picks but rather focused on rising artists from different countries in the region to showcase the young talents.

So, who are the singers behind one of the most iconic World Cup songs yet? Let’s take a look at their career history and why they are the perfect choice for the song.

Nasser Al Kubaisi

Nasser Al Kubaisi, a young Qatari artist, launched his artistic career at the opening ceremony of the Asian Games, which were held in his country in 2006.

He sang at the ceremony as the youngest participant and just before turning 12 years old he appeared at the Coral Swar Theater, in which children performed to hundreds of attendees. Al Kubaisi succeeded in wooing the audience from a young age with his talent and angelic voice.

For the young artist, his latest work for his country has inspired him and served as an opportunity to portray a message that everyone is welcome in the Gulf nation.

“Culture and art are a major and important part of sports, as music and art are closely related to football. We in Qatar are preparing well for this event, as Qatari art will mark its presence inside and outside the stadiums,” he said.

“There will be singing and performances for the crowds. We will spare no effort to [do] our best to provide a rich and enjoyable experience for visitors to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” Al Kubaisi added.

Ayed Yousef

Popular Saudi Arabian singer and artist Ayed Yousef is best known for the song “Besm Al Elah,” which topped the Popnable charts for 3 consecutive weeks and reached the 62nd position as the ‘best effort’.

He was also one of the judges of Saudi Arabia’s first-ever singing talent program “Beat Me if You Can,” which was a huge success in the country.

His talents earned him a spot in the top charts for best Saudi Arabian musicians and artists in 2021.

Haneen Hussein

Haneen Hussein is a sensational rising Kuwaiti artist and singer who is well known for her greatest hit “Bravo Alek.”

The Kuwaiti song by the singer, along with Abdelaziz Lewis and Badr Al-Shuaibi has over 55 million views on YouTube and is the most popular song in the Arab world.

“My joy cannot be described by my participation in the song “Arhbo” for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Thank you to all those in charge of this magnificent work,” she said on her Instagram page after the song’s release.
