Critics’ Choice Awards winners: Olivia Colman and Christian Bale among British winners

Thandie Newton and Ben Whishaw took home TV awards

Christian Bale, Olivia Colman and Thandie Newton were among the British winners at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Handed out by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the awards honour the best in film and television and are considered an accurate indicator of the Oscars.

Bale was the night’s big winner, picking up both the best actor and best actor in a comedy prizes for his role as Dick Chaney in political biopic Vice.

Accepting the award, Bale said: ”I guess time sort of allows it to be considered a comedy, but it’s really a tragedy.”

The actor has won the equivalent comedy award at the Golden Globes and compared Cheney to Satan during his acceptance speech.

The Favourite‘s Colman won the best actress in a comedy prize, beating fellow British performer Emily Blunt, who was nominated for Mary Poppins Returns.

However, Colman lost the best overall actress award to joint winner Glenn Close and Lady Gaga, for their roles in The Wife and A Star is Born respectively.

On the TV side, Thandi Newton took home the best supporting actress in a drama series award for her portrayal of the robot Maeve in HBO’s science-fiction series Westworld.

Ben Whishaw picked up the best supporting actor gong in a limited series or movie made for television for A Very English Scandal.

Other British nominees included Claire Foy, who was up for supporting actress for her role in First Man. She also accepted the #SeeHer award in recognition of her contribution to women in film on the night.

”I accept this award as an encouragement to myself to be brave enough to face and see myself, and by doing, hopefully, I can understand and see others, and ultimately I can help others to see themselves,” she said.

The night’s biggest winner was Alfonso Cuaron’s semi-biographical Roma, which was named best picture.

It won ahead of Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, First Man, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, Mary Poppins Returns, A Star Is Born and Vice.
