Government backs normal birth, looks to ‘abort’ C-section

With an aim to encourage normal deliveries, pregnant mothers will not be able to take the benefits for healthcare treatment under central government's National Health Protection Mission (NHPM).

According to the Union health ministry, all pregnant mothers will have to get their delivery and healthcare treatment done at the government hospitals.

Caesarean sections will be allowed only in private hospitals under the scheme after they are referred there from public hospitals.

"This is done to motivate normal deliveries at the hospitals. Under NHPM scheme, normal deliveries will not be covered which aims to provide a coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family annually and benefit more than 10 crore families belonging to the poor and vulnerable sections of the society," said Indu Bhushan, CEO, Ayushman Bharat National Health Protection Mission.

"Caesarean sections will only be allowed in private hospitals under the scheme after they are referred there from public hospitals specifying the reasons, which could be bed or human resource shortage or other issues," added Bhushan.

As per WHO, the ideal rate of C-section is 10-15 per cent for a country, but in India, Caesarean deliveries have become rampant especially in private hospitals, indicating commercialisation of deliveries, she added.
