It seems that everyone dreams of becoming a princess but one princess is willingly giving up her royal status so she could marry a commoner who was her former classmate in college! Isn’t that so romantic?
Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako of Akishino is the eldest granddaughter of Japanese Emperor Akihito. While studying at International Christian University, Princess Mako met Kei Komuro; the two fell in love with each other.
The princess went on to complete a master’s degree from the University of Leicester and has been working at a museum while her boyfriend works at a law office in Tokyo.
By virtue of Japan’s strict rule of throne succession which only considers males to the position, Princess Mako has no chance of succeeding her grandfather at all; however, she remains a royal. But this might soon end, if she pushes through with her wedding to Komuro.
Because Komuro is a commoner, Princess Mako also becomes a commoner when she marries him. Japan has strict rules about that – and unless those are changed, there’s nothing that anyone can do about it.
But because Princess Mako loves Komuro, she’s willing to become a commoner for him! It’s so romantic, right? The only consolation she has, perhaps, is that Komuro was once a ‘prince’!
To promote tourism, Komuro worked at a beach near Tokyo as ‘Prince of the Sea’. So, he’s not a common commoner, after all. LOL.
Seriously, though, Japan’s strict laws and rules concerning its royals have actually put the royal family at risk of extinction. Right now, there are only four heirs to the throne: the emperor’s two middle-aged sons, his octogenarian brother, and Prince Hisahito, the ten-year-old son of emperor’s younger son.
If Prince Hisahito wouldn’t have a male child, then he will be the last of the imperial family.
Maybe Japan should change its laws and allow females to succeed the throne, instead? That’s a matter that would take years, perhaps decades, to resolve. Even Princess Mako’s upcoming status change is creating a stir in the ranks because if she will be allowed to retain her royal status, then this could spark a domino effect…
